PDF to text

Choose a PDF and all of its text is saved as one plain .txt file, page after page. It all happens on your device.

Runs PDF.js in your browser, a 435.6 KB download the first time you convert. Open-source licenses

How to convert a PDF to text

Choose your file, or drop it on the box above, then select Convert to text.

Download the .txt file. It opens in any text editor, and its text can be pasted anywhere.

What the text file keeps

The words in the order the PDF holds them, line by line, with a blank line between paragraphs and between pages.

Plain text has no fonts, pictures or tables: a table's cells come out as lines of words.

Scanned pages

A scanned page is a picture of text, with no text inside it to copy. The tool tells you which pages are like that.

Reading text from scans (OCR) is on the way, and will run on your device too.

Your file never leaves your device

The text is read in your browser with PDF.js. No file, text or file name is sent to us or to anyone else. PDF.js loads only when you start, so this page stays fast.

A file protected with a password opens once you type its own password on this page. We never get around a file's protection.
