Add page numbers to a PDF

Choose a PDF, pick where the numbers go and how they read, and number every page or only the pages you type. It is done on your device and saved as a new file, never uploaded.

Where
Format

The first page you number gets this number.

Such as 1-3, 5, 8- (8 to the end), or all.

Runs pdf-lib in your browser, a 225.7 KB download the first time you add numbers. Open-source licenses

How to add page numbers to a PDF

Choose your file, or drop it on the box above.

Pick where the numbers go (the bottom or the top, in the middle or a corner) and how they read: 1, Page 1, Page 1 of 12 or 1 of 12.

Leave all to number every page, or type the pages to number, and the first number if it is not 1. Then select Add page numbers and save the new file.

How to type pages

Separate pages and ranges with commas: 1-3, 5, 8- means pages 1 to 3, page 5, and page 8 to the end. Type all for every page.

Choose Your own text and type the line to add at the top or bottom of each page, such as a title, a case name or a date. Type {n} where the page number goes and {total} for the last one.

Letters, numbers and punctuation from English and other Western European languages can be used for now.

Numbers where you see them

The numbers go where you see the bottom or top of each page, even on pages that are turned sideways or trimmed, and they always read upright.

They are drawn in a font that is saved inside the file, so they look the same in every PDF reader and when printed.

Your file never leaves your device

The numbers are added in your browser with pdf-lib, a PDF library that runs on your device. No file, page or file name is sent to us or to anyone else. The tool itself loads only when you start, so the page stays fast.

How large can the file be?

It depends on your device's memory. If the file is too large for your device, the tool says so before it starts, rather than letting the browser close the tab.

A file protected with a password opens once you type its password on this page, and the new file keeps the same password and restrictions. We never get around a file's protection.
