Add Bates numbers to a PDF
Choose a PDF, set the prefix, the digits and the first number, and every page gets the next number. It is done on your device and saved as a new file, never uploaded. When it is done, the tool tells you the next number, so the next file carries on the set.
Before the number, such as CASE-. Can be empty.
After the number. Can be empty.
To continue a set, type the number after the last one.
Such as 1-3, 5, 8- (8 to the end), or all.
Runs pdf-lib in your browser, a 225.7 KB download the first time you number a file. Open-source licenses
How to add Bates numbers to a PDF
Choose your file, or drop it on the box above.
Type a prefix such as CASE- or SMITH-, and a suffix if you use one. Pick how many digits the number has: 6 makes 000001.
Type the first number and pick where the label goes. Then select Add Bates numbers and save the new file.
Number a set of files
Bates numbers run on from one file to the next. After each file, the tool shows the last number it used and offers to number the next file from the number after it, with your prefix, suffix and digits kept.
Number only some pages
Separate pages and ranges with commas: 1-3, 5, 8- means pages 1 to 3, page 5, and page 8 to the end. Type all for every page.
Labels where you see them
The label goes where you see the corner of each page, even on pages that are turned sideways or trimmed, and it always reads upright.
It is drawn in a font saved inside the file, so it looks the same in every PDF reader and when printed. Letters, numbers and punctuation from English and other Western European languages can be used in the prefix and suffix.
Your files never leave your device
The numbers are added in your browser with pdf-lib, a PDF library that runs on your device. No file, page or file name is sent to us or to anyone else, which matters for case files. The tool itself loads only when you start, so the page stays fast.
How large can the file be?
It depends on your device's memory. If the file is too large for your device, the tool says so before it starts, rather than letting the browser close the tab.
A file protected with a password opens once you type its password on this page, and the new file keeps the same password and restrictions. We never get around a file's protection.
