Repair a damaged PDF

Choose a damaged PDF and repair it on your device. The repaired file is then opened page by page, so you see exactly what came back before you download it.

Runs qpdf and PDF.js in your browser, a 921.8 KB download the first time you repair. Open-source licenses

How to repair a PDF

Choose your file, or drop it on the box above.

Select Repair PDF. The file is rebuilt, then each page of the result is opened and checked.

Read what came back, then download the repaired file.

See what came back, counted

After a repair the page shows real figures: how many pages the repaired file has, how many have content, how many came back blank, and how many characters of text it holds.

A page that comes back blank lost its content in the damage, and the page says so. There is no success score or estimate: only what was counted in your file.

If parts of a page could not be read, the page numbers are listed too, so you know which pages to check.

What can be repaired

Most damage is to the index that tells a reader where each part of the file is. That index is rebuilt from the file itself, so files with a broken or missing index, wrong lengths, or extra data after the end usually open again with every page.

A file that was cut off, such as an unfinished download, keeps the pages and text that were saved before the cut. What was never saved cannot come back.

Some files are too damaged to repair, and the page says so. If your file has no damage at all, the page says that too, and gives you no new file.

Your file never leaves your device

The repair runs in your browser with qpdf and PDF.js, two PDF libraries that run on your device. No file, page or file name is sent to us or to anyone else. The tool loads only when you start, and its size is shown under it before then.

A file protected with a password opens once you type its own password on this page, and the repaired file keeps the same protection.
